What You'll Need to Get Started

Is there anything as horrible as starting on a trip? Once you're off, that's all right, but the last moments are earthquake and convulsion, and the feeling that you are a snail being pulled off your rock - Anne Morrow Lindbergh

There are only four things you need to create a web page, using our tutorials:
A Connection to the Internet
Web Space
A Text Editor
An FTP Utility

A Connection to the Internet

If you're reading this page, you have a connection to the internet. You will need a connection that allows you to upload (or transfer) a web page. If you have an AOL, Netcom, AT&T, MSN, etc. account, then you have a connection to the Internet. If you're using a connection from work, there may be a firewall in place that prevents you from using that account to upload files. In that unlikely event, you would need to find another Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Web Space

If you have an AOL, Netcom, or AT&T account, you also already have some space available for your web page. You can contact your Internet Service Provider to find out how much space you have and how you should go about uploading your pages.

Xoom
Geocities
Angelfire
Tripod

A Text Editor

To follow the beginning tutorials, you'll also need a text editor. On Windows, you can use Notepad. Notepad is located in Windows 95 by selecting the Start Button, then Programs, then Accessories, then Notepad.

Mac Users can use SimpleText or TeachText as their text editor.

An FTP Utility

The final item you'll need is an FTP Utility. This is a software application that you will use to upload (copy) your HTML files from your computer to the web space you have. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, or a standard method of transferring files.

If you're using Windows, we recommend WS-FTP.

For Mac users, we suggest Fetch. Both of these applications are shareware.

If you have these four things, then you are ready to begin your web adventure! Fasten your seatbelt, and make sure your tray is in the upright position, it's time for takeoff!
