It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end - Ursula K. Le Guin

First, a little about Web Diner Inc.,or "the Diner" as it came to be known. We ran a forum on America Online for nearly two years that taught tens of thousands of people how to create their first web pages. During that time we saw some amazing things. We saw small businesses gain international clients. We heard from handicapped people who started their own home based businesses. A priest was able to create web pages for his parish and senior group. Kids made web page birthday cards for their friends.
And many of these folks, who started out building their own web pages, ended up creating web pages for others. They were able to start a new career on the web. We also ran across nearly every technical difficulty a beginning web page builder encounters, and developed tutorials to help folks over the rough spots. We believe passionately that the web is a wonderful media for individuals to express themselves, and begin a journey of exploration and discovery. Do you have strong political opinions? A web page can give you an outlet and an audience to express yourself to. Do you have a wonderful business that deserves more exposure? Are you deeply involved with a hobby? Are you job hunting, tired of sending out your resume? Perhaps you're the member of a support group that would like to reach out to the wider community of the web. Are you doing research? All of these topics can make terrific web pages. If you can use email, you can be taught to create a web page. As with any learning experience, there will be frustrations (we prefer to think of them as challenges) and successes. We don't believe the web is a cure-all, or a place to get rich quick. We do believe that with a few hours of instruction and very little investment, most people can create their first web pages and post them on the web. To get you started, we suggest you begin by browsing through web sites that fit your interests to get a feel for what is possible on the web and what kinds of information you might want to add to your own web page. Perhaps you'll run across a great idea - how about a family message board? Or a personal photo album? Keep exploring, and you'll find ideas and inspiration for your own web site. Then, when you feel inspired and ready to go, browse through our tutorials at your own pace. You may also want to consider working together with a friend. That way, you can check each other's web pages as you learn.
As a final aside, we came to feel that web page building should come with a warning label:
