What's HTML?

In order for a web browser like Netscape or Internet Explorer to recognize a web page, the web page needs to contain some simple markup codes known as HTML, or Hyper Text Markup Language.

There are a vast variety of HTML editors, or software that will write the code for you. However, we strongly recommend learning the basic tags first. The reason is that there is no perfect HTML editor, and without some knowledge of HTML, you won't be able to correct the mistakes that either you or your HTML editor makes. Luckily, with just a couple of hours of going through our tutorials, you'll be able to troubleshoot HTML as if you were born to it. Won't your friends and neighbors be jealous? You bet! Pack your HTML bags!

How Does It Work?

You'll begin by reading through our tutorials, following along using a very simple text editor. Then you'll save your file, and upload (copy) it from your computer to a web server. Once your page has been uploaded, it is on the web. Then anyone, any where in the world, who knows the URL (web address) and who has a web browser will be able to see your page. Don't worry if your first page has errors, or looks a little goofy. The chances of someone stumbling across a page they don't have the URL to is very small. It's very simple to change a web page, by editing the copy you have on your computer, saving the changes, and uploading the new copy to the web server. You can also delete pages from a web server, so you're never stuck with an old, outdated, or incorrect page. Now that you know how easy it is to correct errors, you can be bold and make as many mistakes as you need, because that's part of the learning process! Don't let perfectionism paralyze you and prevent you from experimenting and learning.
