How to Use the Web Diner Web Page Templates to Create a Quick Web Page

We have a wonderful variety of web page templates here at the Web Diner, that you can easily use to create your own web page. We have everything from guestbooks to holiday pages to web page templates for kids. This tutorial will help you customize a template and give you some tips on how to upload the page as well.

Unzipping the Templates

Browse through our templates until you find one you like. Then, download the template to your computer. The file will be a zip file, so you'll need an unzipping program to open it. WinZip is available for Windows. Mac users will want to use Zipit to unzip these files. A zipped file is a compressed archive of files. Once you unzip it, you should end up with a single HTML file and one or more graphics in GIF or JPG format. Don't change the names of the graphics, or they won't display on your web page.

To edit the web page in order to personalize it. you may want to open the HTML file in a web browser. To preview the file in your web browser, open the browser, select File/Open File. You'll see what text you want to change.

Editing the Templates

Windows users will want to edit the HTML file using Notepad. Select Start - Programs - Accessories - Notepad. Mac users will want to use SimpleText or TeachText.

Add or delete as much text as you like. Don't remove any of the < HTML > tags - the tags that appear between the greater than and less than symbols. If you find yourself modifying some of the tags in the template, you may want to browse through our tutorials to understand what you're doing. Cynical minds might believe that we only offer templates as a way to get folks to understand how to write their own HTML...

We do ask that you keep a link to the Web Diner if you use the templates.

Uploading the Templates

We do have a complete tutorial on how to upload, or post your files on the web. The important things to remember are:
  • Upload the files to the same names, including the file extension (.htm, .gif, .jpg)
  • Graphics files are not embedded in the HTML - they're linked from the HTML file, so you need to upload all of the graphics files and the HTML file.
  • Upload the files to the same folder/directory on the web server.
