Smileys
Smileys are used online in email, in chat rooms, and on web pages. Because you can't hear the tone of voice, or see the body language of other people online, Smileys are used to let people know that you're joking, or sad, or being sarcastic.

They don't look like faces to you? Think we're pulling one of those 3D stereogram things on you? Nope, you don't need to squint, meditate or otherwise torture yourself: just look sideways at the smileys to see the faces:
