Specialty Sites

Generally, we don't recommend paying for a listing in an internet mall. However, if your product appeals to a very specialized market, it may well make sense to subscribe to a service that reaches that market.

Our advice is to carefully check out any service (including those listed below). Email a several of the businesses using the service to see if they feel it's worthwhile. Do some careful planning to see if your money might be better spent in traditional advertising sources like newsletters, magazines and newspapers that are aimed at your target market. Compare the number of web page views the listing service receives against the number of subscribers for a newsletter or magazine. Ask about the number of sales that the site does per month. It is rare for a listing in an online mall to pay off with the exception of a few small niche areas, In general, don't rely on a single listing in a web site to be your only promotion, and consider such listings to be experimental at best.

These sites don't handle any of the transaction for you, so you will still need to find a way to handle payments from buyers.

There are Exceptions

Speaking with a local small used bookstore this year, I found out that they are currently making about half of their sales online through ABE, so it may well be worth looking into as an additional source of income for some booksellers.

Advanced Book Exchange, or ABE will list your rare books for sale for a cost of between 10 and 35 dollars per month, based on your sales.

Bibliofind is another place to list your rare books. Currently, their fees include a $25 setup fee and $20 per month for up to 40,000 titles.

PRO

  • Easy to set up.
  • Might reach a very specific audience.

CON

  • The track record for Internet malls and other online listings is poor for sales.
  • You still need to have your own web site.
  • This solution is only good if your product is aimed at a very small, very particular market.
