About the Web Diner Forum

We established the Web Diner forum on America Online in October of 1995. During the first month, the forum had 10,000 visitors. This grew to a million visitors by July of 1997 when we closed.

What was the Web Diner about?
Well, the Web Diner wasn't about food, it was about teaching others, especially small business owners, about using the web. Our mission was to empower as many people as possible by teaching people how to use the web to enrich their lives and their businesses.

What was the magnet for a million visitors?
We offered hundreds of tutorials, thousands of downloadable graphics, chats, and HTML classes. Additionally, we offered the unique service, via the Web Diner message boards, of offering personalized HTML help and advice, down to and including actually checking AOL members' HTML on their web sites in order to help them figure out how to correct their problems.

We regretfully announce that the Web Diner Forum is closing, effective July 31, 1997. We want to thank AOL members for their enthusiastic support and participation in the forum. If you're interested in the reasons for our closing, you can check out this story on News.com.

We were amazed at the amount of email we received from AOL members when we announced our closing. There were hundreds and hundreds of stories that moved us. We heard from a grandmother who had created a web site for her grandson, dozens of folks who started out knowing nothing about HTML but who are now web developers, people who were busy helping their favorite charity or nonprofit group reach out via the web, and many, many more wonderful stories.

We would also like to publicly praise the dedicated staff of volunteers who formed the Web Diner Crew. Their professionalism and friendliness was more than anyone could have hoped for. We thank each and every one of you.

Sincerely,

Laurie and Tim McCanna
